Personal Development

At Leading Futures, personal development lies at the cornerstone of our curriculum and ethos

Nurturing Growth

At Leading Futures our Personal Development curriculum is firmly rooted in our three core values:

Aspire, Belong, Connect (ABC)

Aspire for Excellence

Belong to a Community

Connect to Thrive

We expect all members of the Leading Futures community to always exhibit these values.  Our Learning 4 Life lessons are centred around building life skills enabling our learners to live a happy, healthy and successful life.

The key aim is to support learners to become confident, healthy, considerate, responsible young adults through a variety of ways of learning and guidance.

We offer a dynamic curriculum designed to inspire and meet the needs of our learners while supporting their personal growth. Our goal is to empower learners by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to become aware, active, and responsible citizens at local, national, and global levels. We focus on building their confidence to make informed decisions, stay safe, engage with their communities, and strive to become the best version of themselves. Our curriculum ensures that learners gain a deeper understanding of their roles in society, both as children and as future adults.

The Personal Development curriculum integrates elements of PSHE, RSE, Citizenship, British Values, SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural Education), Careers, Enterprise, and Employability. Given the nature of the subject matter, certain topics may resonate more deeply with some students depending on their personal backgrounds and experiences. However, the content is designed to foster understanding and appreciation of others, strengthening relationships and preparing learners for adult life.

Sex and relationships education is taught inclusively, addressing both LGBTQ+ experiences and traditional cisgender heterosexual relationships. In addition, learners are provided with comprehensive lessons on financial literacy and career education.

PSHE contributes to the school’s overall SMSC development, helping learners gain a broad perspective of the world around them. The variety and depth of our curriculum prepares learners for life beyond Leading Futures and school, helping them become well-rounded individuals.

By delivering this curriculum, teachers promote inclusivity, breaking down complex guidance into manageable and actionable lessons. The aim is to encourage learners to reflect on the topics at hand, use a wide range of vocabulary specific to each subject, and equip themselves with the tools to navigate life as teenagers and adults. This approach also helps them better understand the experiences of their peers, fostering empathy and preparing them to navigate relationships with friends, family, partners, and colleagues, both now and in the future.

Our goal is to offer learners a curriculum that challenges them to understand their environment—whether local, national, or global—and equips them with the confidence to address the moral, social, and cultural issues that come with growing up in different contexts. We aim for our curriculum to guide learners in making sound life decisions while helping them explore their future career pathways.

Through scenario-based teaching and honest, clear approaches, we bring the curriculum to life, showing students how relevant and applicable the content is to their own lives.

A key objective of our PSHE program is to overcome barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and enhance life opportunities for all learners, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. PSHE fosters a positive, safe learning environment where learners feel supported by their peers and staff, which in turn boosts achievement, resilience, and overall wellbeing—making it a crucial part of our learners’ development.

This aspect of the curriculum is delivered during tutor time, lessons, and is integrated into cross-curricular activities.

Beyond the classroom, we provide students with a variety of enriching experiences, including educational day trips, careers fairs, work placements, guest speaker visits, Leading Futures council opportunities, recognition of cultural festivals, and more—helping to deepen their understanding of equality, diversity, and tolerance.  At Leading Futures we also raise awareness of key national events like Mental Health Day, Remembrance Day, and Black History Month.

We encourage all learners to engage in a wide range of activities both within and outside the curriculum, contributing to a broader community. Through these experiences, learners develop a sense of identity, self-worth, and the ability to collaborate with others. They are also encouraged to reflect on their personal and social growth, tackling the spiritual, social, moral, and cultural issues that are integral to becoming a young adult.

British Values

The Government defined its concept of ‘British Values’ in it's 2011 Prevent strategy, and since 2014 the Department for Education has required all academies to, “promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

Our community is wonderfully diverse and welcomes and values everyone, whatever their ability, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, or background. Promoting British Values is an intrinsic part of all we do. We expect that these values and attitudes are modelled and promoted by all the staff, allowing learners to see and hear these values in action every day.

By fostering these principles, we help learners to understand the importance of respecting others' rights and freedoms while participating actively in the community. Promoting British Values ensures that learners grow up in an environment where they learn to appreciate diversity, engage in respectful dialogue, and contribute positively to society. These values provide a foundation for building strong, responsible citizens who can contribute to a harmonious and cohesive society.

We promote ‘British Values’ through our personal development curriculum, in conjunction with spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education, RSE, careers, and character education.  These fundamental concepts are developed through all curriculum areas and in all aspects of school life.

Across the curriculum all subject teachers create meaningful opportunities within their lessons to promote British Values, this may be in the form of a discussion, debate, visual stimulus or by reference to their learning and the connection to British Values.  We also have a learner council within our provision which allows learners to be active citizens by sharing their viewpoints and ideas.

Monitoring takes place using Personal Development Passports which are tailored to ensure learners have opportunities to grow in their knowledge and understanding of British Values, preparing them for life in Modern Britain.

At Leading Futures, we recognise and support prominent national events, for example Autism Awareness, Mental Health Awareness Week, Anti Bullying Week and Black History Month through promotion in the Leading Futures newsletter.  Promotional materials, displays, and our website are monitored to ensure balanced representation of our learners from various cultural, religious, ethnic, and socio-economic communities.

Leading Futures Council

Our Leading Futures Council is a dedicated group of learners elected by their peers to represent their classmates and serve as a voice for issues they wish to raise. They play an important role in addressing issues and organising fundraising efforts for both the provision and selected charities.

The council meets regularly to discuss topics such as:

  • Snacks

  • Art projects

  • Improving toilet facilities

  • Enhancing attendance

  • Learner environment

  • Educational Trips

Our council members are identifiable by a badge that they wear on their uniform.  They are deeply passionate about supporting their provision and the wider community.  As staff we are incredibly proud of their contributions.
