Arts and Crafts

As part of our holistic curriculum, we offer a regular arts and crafts experience for our learners. This unique element to our alternative provision provides our learners with mindfulness opportunities which in turn supports their emotional regulation. We are firm believers that these moments of creativity within the day help learners to feel relaxed, easing anxiety and taking them away from any personal pressures they may be experiencing. By creating art, learners gain a sense of accomplishment and develop confidence.  Art projects provide opportunities for self-reflection, personal growth, and can boost self-esteem.

Engaging in art activities can inspire learners, encouraging them to think critically and outside of the box.  Such tasks also aid in the development of physical skills, such as fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Reading and Phonics Support

At Leading Futures, we believe that reading is fundamental to unlocking the full potential of our curriculum. As well as being a critical life skill, reading can inspire and engage learners. We take a rigorous approach to teaching reading, aiming to build learners' confidence, enjoyment, fluency, and comprehension skills.

Our goal is to embed the teaching of reading and writing into the fabric of our school culture, with a focus on improving both academic performance and life outcomes. All staff consistently apply effective reading and writing strategies in their lessons. We emphasise the importance of subject-specific vocabulary and design activities that foster vocabulary development to enhance content knowledge and reading skills. Learners are supported in increasing their automatic word recognition through reinforcement of phonics and sound-symbol relationships.

We regularly assess the reading skills of our learners, noting strengths, difficulties and targets for improvement.  If deemed appropriate, learners will have the opportunity to read 1:1 with staff; these sessions will aim to promote reading for pleasure and are relaxed and fun.  They may include intervention activities which can provide extensive practice in everything from basic phonological awareness to advanced word-attack strategies, as well as vocabulary development. We aim to improve reading fluency by using repeated reading, modeled reading, and text marking activities.

Additionally, we have developed a small library offering a diverse selection of books suited to a variety of reading levels. Our carefully curated collection is designed to both appeal to our learners and challenge them, encouraging exploration of different genres, themes, and cultures.

At Leading Futures, we encourage parents to support reading at home and promote reading for pleasure. The benefits of reading extend beyond literacy, helping to increase empathy, improve relationships, and enhance mood and well-being. We are committed to working with families, providing strategies to support and enrich their child’s reading journey.
